Atmospheric processes affecting methane on Mars

چکیده
It is currently uncertain as to whether methane exists on Mars. Data from the Curiosity Rover suggests a background concentration of few tenths parts per billion whereas data Trace Gas Orbiter suggest an upper limit twenty trillion. If Mars then we do not understand fully physical and chemical processes affecting its lifetime. Atmospheric models over-estimate in lifetime by factor around six hundred compared with earlier observations. In present work assume value estimate uncertainty atmospheric chemistry mixing our column model 1D TERRA. Results that these can only explain ~sixteen lowering This implies if additional, unknown are required observed

Atmospheric biomarkers of subsurface life on Mars
[1] If life exists beneath the Martian surface similar to terrestrial bacteria that rely upon chemical reactions involving H2 and/or CO as energy sources, then it may be possible to infer its existence by observing metabolic byproducts that would appear as trace gases in the Martian atmosphere. We have studied the fate of organic trace gases in the Martian atmosphere and find that most have ver...
متن کاملAtmospheric energy for subsurface life on Mars?
The location and density of biologically useful energy sources on Mars will limit the biomass, spatial distribution, and organism size of any biota. Subsurface Martian organisms could be supplied with a large energy flux from the oxidation of photochemically produced atmospheric H(2) and CO diffusing into the regolith. However, surface abundance measurements of these gases demonstrate that no m...

متن کاملAtmospheric Escape at Mars
Introduction: Several mechanisms have been identified to result in escape of the Martian atmosphere. These mechanisms can be divided in two groups [1]: • Thermal escape or Jeans escape, which corresponds to the loss of atoms in the high energy tail of the energy distribution at the exobase. This mechanism is important only for the light species such as hydrogen or deuterium. • Non-thermal escap...
متن کاملMars atmosphere. Mars methane detection and variability at Gale crater.
Reports of plumes or patches of methane in the martian atmosphere that vary over monthly time scales have defied explanation to date. From in situ measurements made over a 20-month period by the tunable laser spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite on Curiosity at Gale crater, we report detection of background levels of atmospheric methane of mean value 0.69 ± 0.25 parts pe...
